West Bengal and the Trans Community in the Time of COVID-19

There are thousands of Trans persons in the West Bengal who are daily wage workers, hijras and sex workers. They have been completely destabilised by COVID-19.

  • They are unable to earn and support themselves and their families.

  • There is no escape from the situation for the foreseeable future.

  • Workspaces are more unsafe than ever before.

  • Trans sex workers no longer have means for employment.

Samabhabona is working with approximately 1000 trans persons across West Bengal to help bring relief to them.

Cyclone Amphan

During the unprecedented times of COVID-19 our communities are even more vulnerable due to natural disaster. After the Amphan Cyclone in May, 2020, several migrant trans persons who had returned to their homes due to COVID-19 are now homeless. Mangrove forests that safeguard our region is more vulnerable than ever before.

The entire Sundarbans and South 24 Parganas area has been devastated. We are working with communities there to ensure they are able to pull through during this difficult time.
